Abstract:
The available literature indicates that the pre-2000 landscape of South Africa’s townships was
dominated by small, mainly informal businesses referred to as spaza or tuck shops (Ligthelm,
2008; 2005). It is important to note that in this report both spaza and tuck shop will be used
interchangeably
